Golden Years on the Green

Retirement living that puts a swing in your step

By Jessica Galang | July 11, 2011

Though retirement is a time many adults should look forward to, some may have reservations about retirement living because of common myths. Some believe that retirement living is uneventful, isolated from the city, and that one must give up their independence and privacy.

However, Ballantrae Golf and Country Club offers a unique retirement experience for both the avid golf enthusiast and the retiree who simply chooses to enjoy an active lifestyle.

Located just north of Stouffville, Ont., the Ballantrae community is the first of its kind in the province. It consists of individual brick homes surrounding an 18-hole championship golf course, and is conveniently located near major shopping areas and Highway 404. The community has won numerous awards like the Ontario Home Builders’ Association award for most outstanding adult lifestyle project, and its builder, Schickedanz Bros., is the only company in Ontario to receive Audubon recognition for its commitment to making the golf course environmentally sensitive.

Ballantrae allows homeowners to own their home without having to worry about lawn and driveway maintenance during the year. “It creates a wonderful lifestyle and the ability to carry on working so you can come and go as you please, and when you come back your yard looks just as good as you left it,” says Hugh Macklin, project manager of Ballantrae.

“A lot of retirement homes geared towards adults are high-rise or multi-connected. Ballantrae is unique in that it provides you with benefits of condominium living and it provides you with your own homes not connected in any way to your neighbour.”

Ballantrae also houses a recreation centre where residents can swim, exercise, play cards and billiards, and engage in many other activities. In addition, there is a restaurant with a fully licensed dining room and terrace that is open during the golf season.

“People can stay within the community if they want to, so really the only time they have to leave is to buy food,” says Macklin.

Residents choose from interior plans provided by the builder, and an on-site decor centre ensures their concerns will always be heard.

“When residents buy a home, they can go into the decor centre and make the changes that are necessary whether it be flooring or countertops,” says Macklin. “We are in touch with our residents at an almost day-to-day basis and with their feedback we can provide all the amenities they require.”

With its distinct concept and design unmatched anywhere else in Canada, Ballantrae will have you enjoying days of relaxation and the life you’ve always dreamed of.•
