For the past 35
years, adventure film aficionados, mountaineers and fans of the silver screen have flocked to the Banff
Mountain Film Festival, a festival that showcases a selection of films from around the world, for an
exhilarating nine days of movie entertainment.
The Banff Mountain Film Festival is recognized today as not only the largest mountain film tour in the world,
but one of the most prestigious. The festival is sponsored by some of the biggest names in the
climbing/adventure industry: National Geographic, The North Face and Parks Canada.
Guests at the Banff Centre can expect to see a mix of short to feature-length films featuring a range of
themes, including climbing, skiing, kayaking, biking, adventure, culture and the environment. While there is
sure to be an abundance of heart-pumping adrenaline in the lineup, intense films are presented along with
visually stunning documentaries that move at a slower pace to invite the audience to bask in the beauty of
our world. For those interested in action-packed sequences alone, the Banff Centre presents its Radical Reels
Tour, which focuses solely on adventure films.
Some of last year’s titles included Beyond the Summits, Mont-Blanc Speed Flying and Leanne Allison’s winning
feature, Finding Farley.
The extraordinary lineup of films presented each year are chosen by a pre-selected committee, who have the
daunting task of choosing 25 films from the collection of more than 300 that are submitted each year. The
selected films are then viewed by an international film jury and shown to the public during the festival.
The tour hits theatres in more than 30 countries worldwide, and reaches an audience of more than 210,000
people. The audience is hugely varied: World-class climbers share armrests with businessmen and students.
