The English city of Liverpool is famed
internationally as being the hometown of such beloved exports as The Beatles and Liverpool FC and now it can boast another proud innovation with
the opening of the new Museum of Liverpool. Opened on Jul. 19 along Liverpool’s Mersey River, the $100
million structure is the largest national museum to be built in the UK in over 100 years.
Although many exhibits
will celebrate the history and creative talent of Liverpool, a touch of Canadian history isn’t far away. Just
outside of the new museum sits Canada Boulevard, a collection of memorial plaques laid into the pavement in
memory of Canadian ships that were lost during the Second World War.
Situated on a
UNESCO World Heritage
Sitenext
to Liverpool’s famous Three Graces, a trio of landmarks, the new museum was designed by Kim Herforth Nielsen,
the principal architect and creative director at Danish architecture firm 3XN. Designed to be reminiscent of
the trading ships that used to dominate the Pier Head harbour, the museum will function as a nexus by
connecting the harbour promenade to Albert Dock and will feature themed galleries that document the history
of Liverpool as well as famous creative Liverpudlians.
