Mulgrave
is an independent, co-educational school that caters to students from kindergarten through grade 12. Apart
from gaining knowledge through the enriched curriculum, students at Mulgrave also undergo overall personality
development. They develop into confident, knowledgeable, compassionate and spirited citizens who have the
zeal to help others. Global Outreach is a service learning and action program that teaches middle and senior
school students to reach out and help those in need.
The main objective of the Global Outreach program is to help children in distress, whether it is on a local,
national or international level. Along with developing global awareness, it encourages cultural understanding
by cultivating connections, friendships and teamwork. Students are engaged in humanitarian team projects and
collaborative aid initiatives that foster compassion and empathy.
The program follows the basic themes of the International Baccalaureate Programme (IB), with prime focus on
creativity, action and service. Students are encouraged to develop critical thinking, ask challenging
questions and broaden their outlook regarding the global society. They are advised to develop a strong sense
of identity and culture. Through participation, students get to experience service learning along with
learning to lead by example.
The program commenced as a service club known as the Kids Care Club, which aimed at helping kids in need.
Recently rechristened as a Global Outreach Program, it still instills in students the same passion as 10
years ago. In unison with local, national and international organizations such as UNICEF and the Mennonite
Central Committee, students strive to make a difference in the lives of children around the world. Mulgrave's
students have participated in such events around the world. The funds needed for the events are raised by the
students themselves through donations, in-kind gifts, fundraising and events such as the Magic of Christmas
and cultural lunches.
Over the years, the school has conducted many global outreach events which have made minor, but beneficial
changes. The efforts and initiatives of the students, organized as a joint venture with Habitat for Humanity,
has helped in improving the living conditions in Central America.
Students have also extended assistance to a nursery center and community schools. They have offered books for
schools in Costa Rica and Swaziland and provided clothing, books, art supplies and musical instruments to
Cuban children.
The hands-on experience gained at Mulgrave instills in student’s essential virtues for good moral character
like humility, empathy, care and concern for other individuals. Above all, the sense of satisfaction and
happiness felt by students make their efforts seem invisible in comparison to their move to make the world a
better place.•
