The
Mercedes G-Class has a distinctive form, designed for function. This icon of off-roading vehicles first hit
the marketplace in 1979. While much has been improved, the car retains its original
look.
Many SUVs try to be both a luxury vehicle and
practical four-by-four. Sixty-three armies around the world and NATO make the Mercedes their off-roader of
choice. Beyond being a true sports utility vehicle, the G-Wagen has the equivalent power of a high-end sports
car, clocking in at 0-100 km/h in 6.1 seconds.
Whereas most SUVs are built for off-roading novices, you do need to know a bit
about driving to maximize the G-Wagen performance, in particular the locking
differentials.
While the torsional flex of the G-Wagen may draw some criticism for its street
performance, if you are looking for a tough vehicle to get you to your ski chalet on roads that are packed
with ice and snow, you are in good hands. This car is ferocious and really feels like nothing could stop it.
That sort of inspired confidence may make even the most novice driver feel safer when bad weather hits and
the roads are seemingly impassable.

Gear’s Richard Hammond
called this vehicle “the coolest car in the world.” He was referring to the fact that after a day of
off-roading, a quick trip to the car wash is all one needs to restore the vehicle’s luxurious bling. The
finishing touches on the rugged G-Wagen take it from functional to the high point of style, the sort of
machine that will make people stare in awe from their window seats at the swankiest of
restaurants. •
