Stanley Thompson built it, Byron Nelson made history on it and decades later, members continue to enjoy the benefits of belonging to Thornhill Golf and Country Club.

Thornhill’s legacy began at the 1945 Canadian Open with Nelson’s historic win, which marked his 11^th consecutive victory — a record that hasn’t been broken yet.  

Considered one of the best-kept secrets in the Greater Toronto Area, it’s still a place of great prestige. “One of the reasons our course has withstood the test of time is that we boast one of the best in the turf management business in our course superintendent Greg McFarlane,” says Thornhill general manager Matt Butko. “Greg provides our members with overall conditioning that is second to none.”

With two courses, Thornhill promises a challenge for golfing families of all skill levels and a great time. They have a long-course layout that boasts five sets of tees and a nine-hole Valley Course. “It’s the elevation that provides the challenge, yet doesn’t take away the fun,” says head professional Tim Moore. “When I bring people here, they leave with smiles on their faces from the experience.”

Along with their outstanding course, Thornhill has a committed learning environment, with “Improve your game” as their slogan. They teach golfers of all levels and provide tips to members and guests. “We have dedicated teaching professionals on site six days a week,” says Moore, whose staff also runs popular summer camps for junior kids.
Along with golf, Thornhill has accomplished curling and tennis programs. Dave Dalton, head curling professional, and Dale Power, tennis pro and Tennis Canada Hall of Famer, have been working for many years at Thornhill. They have lessons and programming for all levels of play. Thornhill also provides a great dining experience at the clubhouse, where guests enjoy special events, guest speakers and activities including holiday celebrations. •
