“Farnsworth achieves a level of intensity that
makes these works sublime, almost mystical meditations on the artist's approach to art and life… An artist to
watch, and who continues to grow as a painter.” — John K. Grande, art
critic
Geoff Farnsworth’s
training began in his hometown, Vancouver, at the Federation of Canadian Artists, a summer Art Access program
at Emily Carr, and especially at Capilano College where he was inspired by artist/teacher Kiff Holland.
Holland urged him to continue his training at the Art Students League of New York, where he spent five years
between 1997 and 2002. For the last four years Farnsworth has been living and painting in Niagara Falls, Ont.
His work has been extensively shown and collected nationally and internationally.
“This exhibition is made
up of a series of several paintings that were inspired by being asked to show back in my hometown of
Vancouver,” Farnsworth explains. “The landscapes come out of a synthesis of response to Vancouver and B.C.
motifs along a spectrum between direct observation, a generalized emotional response to the home that was
mine for two decades, and an abstracted reaction to an inner world that was in great part shaped from my
years here.
“An excitement for colour,
emotional response and an intuitive approach to building up paint layers has resulted in this collection of
new paintings. These works are a glimpse into the way in which I see and react, and also a celebration of the
city I love.”
From Oct. 20 to Nov. 3, Farnsworth will be showing his work at the Kurbatoff Art
Gallery, located in South Granville’s Gallery Row in Vancouver. •
