Tabletop Eggstravaganza

This year the bunnies are hopping into Easter one dinner plate at a time

By Sarah DiVito | April 3, 2010

Even though we haven’t had a winter wonderland this year, it has nonetheless been cold, bleak and yes, dreary.

But it is this time of year when vibrant, colourful flowers are potted and plants are finally brought out of the home and into the sunshine — it is a time where we can all safely say, spring is finally here. Everything comes out of hibernation mode and life becomes infused in everything.

Easter is the perfect indicator for the arrival of spring, because pops of colour are added into the décor as the holiday approaches. Bringing the seasonal colours and décor to the table is essential whether you’re hosting an intimate family dinner or a casual brunch for one of the most cherished holidays.

These six fabulous Easter tabletop items and ideas will bring your table together and make for a dazzling ambiance that screams, “Spring is here!”

1. Hopping onto the Table
To begin the tabletop Easter take over, a beautiful tablecloth is needed. Start with covering the table by sticking to the traditional Easter colour palette with William-Sonoma’s vibrant green tablecloth. This gorgeous covering is woven with lustrous cotton and linen and has a Jacquard pattern of woodland bunnies, leafy scenes and blooming flowers. It comes in three sizes for $120-160.

2. Mellow Yellow
You’re probably planning on cooking up a storm for Easter and you obviously would like for all your guests to taste everything. Finding the right plate that will fit all the delicious food you prepare is difficult, but finding the right shade to fit in with the Easter colour scheme, makes buying dinnerware even more tedious. Along with green, yellow remains one of Easter’s trademark colours. Crate&Barrel has the Hamptons Yellow Platter dinner plate that is 12.26” in diameter — perfect for all those healthy vegetables and barbequed meats — and also has an Easter-inspired colour — pastel yellow.  It is a relaxed yet refined look in white porcelain accented with a yellow rim. It would feature nicely with other white dinnerware and Easter colours.

3. Eggcellent Name Placers
What would be an Easter without egg cups? The ideal name place holders for this special holiday are these cute and traditional egg holders. Pottery Barn has a set of four for $29 that come in soft colours like blue, yellow, pink and green.

4. A Victorian Embrace
Easter reminds me of a more extravagant tea party. With the soft colours and quaint décor, you would think we’re back in the Victorian era. Pottery Barn has done it again with the Victorian Tumbler,  a set of six enchanting, Victorian antique-inspired glass cups ($36). They come in a number of soft colours and showcase an intricate design and texture that is perfect for an elegant Easter tabletop.

5. Flowery Blossoms
Adding fine details is what makes the tabletop. Crate&Barrel shows us how we can do this with their Flower Beaded Napkin Rings ($2.95 each), which will add some flare to ordinary white napkins. The rings are absolutely adorable and Easter-appropriate with their ornamental looped “petals” of glass beads that burst from a matching beaded metal ring in pearly aqua, green or white.

6. Tier me up
As we mentioned before, flowers help make your place feel more like spring. An Easter centerpiece is no exception to this. Enliven your table with an arrangement of egg-cup bouquets displayed on cake stands. Flowers represent spring and summer so why not incorporate flowers onto your tabletop this year? Here’s how to add that fresh, floral feel to an Easter table:

• First, you’ll need two cake stands, like the Emma Cake Stand from Pottery Barn ($38).

• The second thing is egg holders — most preferably white porcelain ones, but coloured holders like the ones mentioned above are just as fabulous.

• Choose small-budded flowers in similar colours — we suggest yellow tulips, white lily of the valleys and daffodils from your local flower shop. Trim the stems so the blossoms will peek over the rims of the eggcups.

• Lastly, arrange the mini bouquets on and around the stands and water daily.

… and voila! A captivating centerpiece for the table that will surely get your guests replicating it for Easters to come. •
