Since it re-opened in 2003 after
intense restoration by hundreds of craftsmen, the Distillery District in Toronto has become one of the leading
arts, culture and entertainment destinations in Canada. With cobblestone walkways, 19th-century buildings and
visual appeal, not to mention easy accessibility thanks to its no-car rule (implemented to avoid blocking the
district’s picturesque scenery), it feels like a step back in time as you browse the bakeries, coffee shops,
art galleries, as well as clothing and jewelry stores.
It’s only fitting, then, that
this weekend the Distillery District would have their very own Artisans showcased
at the Distillery Summer Art & Craft Festival, an outdoor event which includes 75 Canadian artists of all
kinds for visitors to discover.
This year, listen to the music
of Lauren Best, whose passionate and poetic lyrics have been acclaimed by Liz Zetlin, a former Poet Laureate
of Owen Sound, Ont., and take in the art of Gabor Schultz, who was selected for a special arts program at the
Hungarian National Gallery at only nine years old and continues to be inspired by the beauty of nature.
If you’re craving some homemade
recipes, Yummies in a Jar makes homemade jams, pure maple syrups, fat-free vinaigrettes and other all-natural
condiments, and give yourself a gift from Rogue Goat, who makes handmade jewelry from wood from fallen forest
trees and carpentry scrap to create contemporary, one-of-a-kind designs.
With a wide variety of music,
handmade jewelry, pottery, toys, furniture, glass, paintings and photography, and fashion, there’s sure to be
something found for everyone.
The festival begins on Saturday and runs until Monday, August 1. Admission is
free.
