What is
LASIK?
Laser vision correction is a great alternative to eyeglasses and contact
lenses. Not only can it help you see better it can also help you enjoy a quality of vision that is
superior to what is possible with prescription glasses or contact lenses.
Blurred vision is typically a
result of the eye being too long or too short. It can also be caused by an irregular shaped cornea, which is
the outer, clear portion of the eye’s surface.
The LASIK procedure uses an
excimer laser to correct this error, by reshaping the cornea. This precise reshaping allows light rays to
focus directly onto the back portion of the eye called the retina, providing clear vision.
The majority of people who wear
glasses have either nearsightedness, far-sightedness and/or astigmatism, and these common refractive errors
can be corrected by reshaping the cornea.
The
Procedure
The LASIK procedure
begins with the creation of a thin protective layer of corneal tissue using an automated precision
instrument. This layer is called the “flap” and is gently folded back to reveal the inner cornea. A computer
controlled laser beam is then used to specifically reshape the cornea according to your prescription. The
flap is repositioned and acts to cover and protect the area. Only the edges are exposed so healing takes
place within a few hours.
The procedure is quick and
painless. It takes approximately 10 minutes in total for both eyes, and on average, the actual
laser time is 30 seconds.
The
Results
After LASIK there is no
need to worry about glasses or contact lenses to see well. With just one treatment, 98% of our patients
achieve at least 20/40 vision, the level required to drive a car without glasses or contact lenses. This
improves to 100% for the few people who undergo an enhancement procedure. Many patients even exceed
expectations and attain 20/15 vision, which is better than 20/20.
Virtually all patients tell us
that LASIK not only improved their vision… it also improved their lives. In terms of visual recovery, all
patients experience better visionwithin a few hours of their procedure. And the vision continues to improve as the eyes
heal.
One of the main benefits of
LASIK is that downtime is minimal; most patients are able to go back to work within 24 hours of their
procedure.
Is LASIK for
you?
Laser vision correction
is an extremely safe and effective procedure with twenty years of proven results. During that time, over 35 million cases have been performed
worldwide.
90% of all people between the
ages of 18 and 65 who are either nearsighted, far-sighted or have astigmatism – are excellent candidates for
the procedure. So if you’re interested in finally freeing yourself from your glasses and contacts, than maybe
you should have a look at LASIK•
