Students in British Columbia generally pay for
post-secondary education either through their savings, income from a part-time job or assistance from their
family. However, should these resources fall short of the required amount, students can apply for financial
aid through the StudentAid BC financial
system.
StudentAid BC provides loans, grants, scholarships and bursaries to students who are unable to finance their
higher education using their own resources. StudentAid BC provides funding and assistance on behalf of the
Canada Student Loans and the Canada Student Grants.
Financial assistance from StudentAid BC is available to all residents of British Columbia who plan to attend
a ”designated post-secondary institution” in the province. Although all public universities and colleges are
designated under this program, many private schools have yet to be approved.
There is a certain eligibility criteria that students need to fulfil in order to receive funding from
StudentAid BC. Along with being a permanent resident of British Columbia and pursuing full-time studies as
their primary occupation, students must also demonstrate financial need.
The funding that you receive from StudentAid BC will be calculated according to your financial needs.
Financial needs refer to the amount by which your resources fall short of the total cost of education. A
student's resources generally include savings, earnings from part-time jobs and, in some cases, a
contribution from the student’s parents or RESPs.
Once you have decided to obtain funding from StudentAid BC there is a simple application process that you
will need to complete. You can apply to StudentAid BC as soon as the applications for the upcoming school year are offered to the
public.
Once you have selected the post-secondary college that you want to attend you need to determine the period of
your program as well as your financial need. Your next step would be to file the StudentAid BC application
form either online, through the mail or through fax.
After the application has been submitted it is assessed by StudentAid BC on the basis of financial needs,
educational qualification and the duration requiring funding. Even if your application is accepted by
StudentAid BC, it is important to note that the financing is not received until you are granted admission to
your college of choice. Once your enrolment has been confirmed, StudentAid BC will wire the financing
amount directly into your bank account.
The money that you receive from StudentAid BC should be used first and foremost to pay for tuition and other college fees. There are a number
of rules and regulations related to your class attendance and your decision to withdraw from the program. You
are also obligated to inform StudentAid BC of any changes such as your income, marriage, birth of a child or
transfer of schools.
The primary responsibility to pay for post-secondary and higher studies lies with the students themselves.
However, it is not always possible for the student to accumulate the required amount of resources within the
required time frame. In such a case, StudentAid BC would be the perfect option for students to get funding
for their higher studies in the form of loans, grants or bursaries.•
