The application process and entrance
requirements vary across different universities. This can be traced to the fact that there is no single standardized test to evaluate
candidates. The application process also varies depending upon the province the applicant is
in.
Still, one common factor that applies to all universities and colleges is a strict adherence to deadlines.
Therefore, if applicants are serious about gaining admission to the college or university of their choice,
they must plan ahead and be diligent with deadlines.
Foremost, applicants need to do some research and find out whether the university to which they wish to apply
offers the programs and courses that they want to study. They should also find out about the eligibility
criteria and ensure that they meet these prerequisites. This information can be easily found on the Internet.
Next, they should find out about the application requirements as it varies from province to province.
For example, when applying to universities in Ontario, applicants need to apply through OUAC, or the Ontario
Universities' Application Centre. Whether they are in the final year of high school or have already
graduated, they can easily make an account on the website. This makes the application process easier
for applicants by providing a direct link between them and the different universities across the
province.
Generally, the website offers a flat fee for applying to up to three universities of an applicant's choice.
However, he or she can apply to as many universities as desired, though each additional choice involves
additional fees. It is advisable for an applicant to narrow down his or her choices to a reasonable number,
depending upon the credentials of the university and course availability.
Applicants need to plan their back-up schools to avoid inconvenience should they not get selected by the
university of their choice. The OUAC makes applicants' high school grades available to the universities for
review, and by logging in online the applicants can check to find out if they have been accepted by the universities of their choice. Even if they have
accepted an offer of admission from a particular college, they can still accept an offer of admission from
another college before the deadline.
On accepting the second choice, the first one automatically gets cancelled. However, upon accepting the
offer, the applicant needs to visit the respective university's website to find out other relevant
information, such as the last date to pay tuition fees, et cetera, as the OUAC does not display deadline
information.
When applying to universities outside of Ontario, applicant needs to apply through the respective
university's admission office. They will have to send a fee with their application, which includes a high
school transcript listing all their grades. In addition, they also need to fill out application forms that
are available on the universities' websites.
They may be required to fill out information about their community involvement and extracurricular
activities, as well as provide letters of recommendation. Students generally receive their response from
universities between March and late May. However, offers to the high achievers are often sent early, between
November and January.
The high-quality education offered by Canadian
universities attracts tens of thousands of applications each year. It is advisable that applicants diligently
abide with the deadlines of individual colleges and plan ahead to improve their chances of
admission.•
